Apply hazard warning lights. Walk around car and inspect indicators

 

Operate brake pedal, make use of reflection in window or garage door etc or ask someone to help..

 

 

With the engine turned on the steering should feel significantly easier/lighter when the wheel is turned.

 

Apply footbrake firmly. Demonstrate by applying the handbrake, it should tighten before it reaches the end of its working travel.

 

 

Identify the dipstick, explain it should be pulled out, wiped then replaced, removed again. The oil level should be visible between min/max levels. Top up if req.

 

Identify the bottle and explain if necessary top up level to between min/max levels. Caution should be used as it may be hot.

Check is carried out using the control on the steering wheel.

 

Ignition lights must be on. Operate the control. Pull the wiper control towards the wheel for approx 2secs. Wipers will wash and wipe automatically.

 

 

 

Set the controls including air direction up, fan on 4, and heater setting on hot (red). Also rear demister button should pressed.

 

 

Switch headlights on then rear fog lights. Explain fog lights should be used when visibility is reduced to 100 metres or less.

 

Switch lights on then pull control towards wheel. Green dipped light should change to blue full beam light. Repeat to switch off again.

 

 

Some vehicles have min/max level if not check inside bottle. Top up as req.

 

 

 

 

Brakes Should not feel spongy or slack. Should be tested as you set off. Car should not pull to one side.

 

Manufacturer’s guide, use a reliable tyre pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget the spare and refit valve (dust) caps.

 

Head restraint should be inline with ears and eye line and as close to the back of the neck as poss.

 

 

 

1.6mm across the central ¾ of the tyre with visible tread around the entire outer circumference.

 

 

 

Turn the lights on. Explain you would now walk around the vehicle and check lights are working.

 

Warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the antilock braking system.
